There are traditions of Sphinxes in Greek and Egyptian History.  The Greek Sphinx was typical seen as a woman, The Egyptian Sphinx as a man. The Earliest reference to to a sphinx was found in the area of what is now Turkey almost 10,000 years BC.

The most famous of all sphinx is found today in Egypt, near Cairo and in the midst of all the Pyamids.
